Office of Faith Formation

St. Jerome. Caravaggio, c. 1606.

Twenty-five hundred years ago Aristotle taught his students, and subsequently the rest of us, that we do not become people of virtue by reading a book on how to become virtuous. We become people of virtue by having virtuous people in our lives whose example we can emulate. On the vertical axis of life the Father sent his Son, Jesus the Christ. As an article of faith we hold that Jesus is God who became man and who concretely intersected with humanity at a specific time, in a particular place. True God and true man who is the ultimate example of a virtuous life. On the life’s horizontal axis we have all of humanity, including those who have already slipped their earthly bonds and have gone home to God. God’s revelation to us, including Christ’s example of how we should live our lives can be found in Sacred Scripture. In addition to all that is contained in Sacred Scripture we have access to the teachings of the Church, to those who have gone before us, and to one another.

Just as the God-head exists as a community, we too must be part of a community. It is safe to say that humans do not do well alone. We need people around us, people who love us and who care for us. It is in good relationships that we maximize our own potential. We draw strength from the positive examples of others. It is because of this that the true value of one’s faith-journey is not to be found upon at the destination. The true value is measured in the number of lives that you have positively touched enroute to your destination.

The Office of Faith Formation at Our Lady Help of Christians serves the entire parish by providing various programs designed to assist in the deepening of your faith. The programs with a brief description are as follows:

Adult Faith Formation – a program designed to address the dual focus of faith enrichment – information and formation. By using the mediums of lecture series, discussion groups, bible study, prayer groups, retreats, liturgy, ritual and renewal sessions this program assists in providing a reflective anchor for further faith development.

Religious Education for Children – a program for children attending public schools who are in grades one through seven. It is in this program that the faculty and staff assist parents in introducing their children to the Roman Catholic faith and in preparing them for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and modified for Children (RCIC) – this program has a threefold purpose – 1) to prepare non-Christian adults and older children for entry into the Roman Catholic faith, 2) to prepare non-Catholic, baptized Christians for a full profession of the Roman Catholic faith, and 3) to assist baptized Roman Catholics with the completion of their Sacraments of Initiation or to provide a refresher course for fully initiated Catholics who are returning to the Church after a prolonged absence.

Pre-Cana and Baptismal Preparation – are you planning to get married or have you just been blest with a child? These programs are designed to remind you that marriage and birth are so much more than secular realities. The family is the basic unit of the Church, the building block upon which everything else is built – it is vitally important to understand how you fit into the larger picture of Christ’s mystical body.

Service Ministries – various programs designed to provide those parishioners who have volunteered with the knowledge necessary to perform the functions of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Ministers of Hospitality, and Altar Servers.

Consolation Ministry – the death of a loved one is always the greatest test of our strength and faith. This program is a training program for those who would like to provide both spiritual and physical comfort to loss who are mourning the loss of that very special person.
